Happy Father’s Day: The Daddy Versus The Father
By Will Curl
I have often heard those around me debating which is more valuable, a Daddy or a Father. It seems that many believe they are two different people. Some believe that anyone can be a Father but that it takes someone special to be a Daddy. Some make it known that the paternal holiday is called “Fathers Day’ and not “Daddy’s Day”. I find myself in amazement that the discussion even exists. Is there really a difference between a Father and a Daddy and if so what could it possibly be?
Those who say that anyone can be a Father are referring to the fact that most any man can father a child and therefore become a Father by title. However, others define a Father quite differently. For them the Father they honor on Fathers Day is the man who works hard to support them everyday. He is the one who sets the rules and enforces them as well. The Father becomes a person that is not often seen. His dedication to ensuring his family is cared for causes him to work many hours. He is often tired and may spend little quality time with his children. His devotion may come with a sacrifice and he only hopes his family will understand one day.
Then there is the Daddy. For many this is the outgoing Dad who somehow makes the time to spend with his children. He takes them on trips and is there for all the important activities in their life. He enjoys all of their sporting events and watches them in all the school plays. He is eager to get involved in their lives and is always readily approachable for any problem or need. He seems to be the Daddy who genuinely cares and loves his children. Actually, I see things from a different point of view.
These two men are one and the same. Perhaps circumstances have led them to approach their roles of fatherhood differently but both are Daddy’s as well. They are both the Father and the Dad. Dad is a term we use affectionately but all of them are really our Fathers first and foremost. Different paths in life allow our Fathers to spend more or less time with us. It does not mean that they love us any less or any more. Good Fathers have to do what they think is best for their children.
This Fathers Day keep in your mind and heart the true description of a Father is not what anyone writes in book or says in a famous movie. The true description is what you feel in your very own heart. This Fathers Day honor your Father for being the best Father and Daddy he could be.
