Friends are so unique
So very hard to find
Friends will not critique
They are one of a kind

To lose a friend to death
Empties out your heart
You know with their last breath
Your souls will never part

As I watched you laying there so calm
I could have sworn that you were sleeping
The years of stress were no longer there
The shadow of pain had left your face

It seemed like you were napping Grandpa
Like you used to do on hot summer days
There was certainly a peace about you
I swear you looked relaxed to me Grandpa

Like a man resting after a long journey
I know that you are gone forever more
I will miss you for the rest of my life
But you looked like you were sleeping

You had spent nearly 50 years together
And then we lost Dad these three years ago
As much as we hurt you hurt much more
It seemed that part of you went with him
The pain of loss became a shadow upon you
You had lost your very best friend Mom
Been forsaken of your partner in this life

For three years you suffered on bravely
You wore a smile to warm our hearts
But inside that heart was slowly dying
Until one morning you said goodbye to us
Years of sorrow had come to an end
The shadow of pain had been lifted
You were with Father once again

I find no sweetness in my sorrow
As I say goodbye to you forever
I could care less about tomorrow
Only the years we spent together

There is no sweetness in my sorrow
As I stand beside your grave
I feel the emptiness in me grow
My soul it cannot save

I will not allow sweetness in my sorrow
I need my time to grieve
Our time on earth we borrow
In that I do believe

Funerals are depressing
Sad and full of tears
Memories are confessing
Not just empty years

A time to say goodbye
To someone we loved so
Ours not to question why
But just to let them go

The years pass and I miss you so
How I’ve survived I just don’t know
You were my anchor for so very long
The one who taught me right from wrong

Back to when you tucked me in at night
Left my door open and turned on the hall light
The little things that you used to do
Now fond memories of all we went through

As I grew older you were always around
Cheering me up when I was down
No problem I had was ever too small
You always took the time to hear them all

Now that you’re gone I feel so alone
And although I know you rest by a throne
I miss you so much its selfish I know
But that is how much I love you so
